Desecration (Wizard Queen at Sixteen #1) by Hadley Holt

10 Aug

In a hidden world of wizards where only men hold the power of magic, one girl arises with the power to change everything – only if she survives… Addie never questions why men possess magic and women have none until she discovers her own magic, which makes her a desecration. Her fate sends her into the path of an evil sorcerer, but the worst danger may come from inside her own home!

MY RATING: 4 Stars

MY THOUGHTS
NoteDesecration is a three part serial in The Wizard Queen at Sixteen series.

In a world where women are seen as nothing more that breeders, party planners and where the association of Magical folk with humans, also called “norms”, is frowned upon Addie at first must hide that she has Magical powers to avoid the Wizard society from turning her into a Lab rat or worse. But she has to get stronger and embrace who she is so as to change the way life in the Wizard Society is.

Part 1 was a fun and interesting read from the first page to the last. The story was witty, gripping and fast-paced enough that you cannot help but get hooked. I knew from page one that following Addie’s Journey in her magical world was going to keep me entertained and enjoying the whole experience.
The main characters where strong, well developed and likeable. The conversations came naturally and the story flowed beautifully.

I enjoyed the way the Author was trying to combat societies view of how females can never amount to anything more that just being…well “baby manufacturing” machines. It was inspiring reading it all and being there every step of the way as Addie matured and changed from the little scared girl to a confident force to be reckoned with.

I would say this is a series I know many YA readers will enjoy and personally I can’t wait to see what Addie and her friends get up to in the other books.

Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2) by Laini Taylor.

9 Aug

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

MY RATING: 5 Stars

MY THOUGHTS
So Laini Taylor does it again in this sequel to Daughter of Smoke & Bone. Her writing is so exceptionally captivating and I found myself almost about to cry by the events in this book. It is a world of devastation and terror, tears and blood. A world where you will find yourself wondering if a time existed when happiness was a thing.
I love how Laini just pulls you in with her words and let’s you feel the pain and emotion of the characters. While at the same time squeezing in some humour and witty conversations that make you smile and sometimes even laugh or just go like “wow”.
For example the passage below, you will see for yourselves 🙂

“Let’s see. You know how, at the end of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wakes up in the crypt and Romeo’s already dead? He thought she was dead so he killed himself right next to her?”

“Yeah. That was awesome.” A pause, followed by “Ow,” suggested elbow punctuation on the part of Mik.

Karou ignored it. “Well, imagine if she woke up and he was still alive, but…” She swallowed, waiting out a tremor in her voice. “But he had killed her whole family. And burned her city. And killed and enslaved her people.”

That is how most of the book is…just amazing.

The Seraph and the Chimaera are still battling it out and its more pain and heartbreak for our dear Karou as the age old war continues.

It is war like you have never read it, or heard of it. You will cry, curse, scream and drop down to your knees asking “why? Oh why is this happening? but at the same time you will just continue reading, hoping and praying that the sun will shine through the darkness and Karou and Akiva will eventually find their way back to each other.

From the bottom of my hurting and hopeful heart I would just like to say Laini Taylor is a Goddess among mere humans. I really enjoyed this and hope those who haven’t read it up to now will enjoy it too.

Angelfire (Angelfire #1) by Courtney Allison Moulton

9 Aug

First there are nightmares.
Every night Ellie is haunted by terrifying dreams of monstrous creatures that are hunting her, killing her.

Then come the memories.
When Ellie meets Will, she feels on the verge of remembering something just beyond her grasp. His attention is intense and romantic, and Ellie feels like her soul has known him for centuries. On her seventeenth birthday, on a dark street at midnight, Will awakens Ellie’s power, and she knows that she can fight the creatures that stalk her in the grim darkness. Only Will holds the key to Ellie’s memories, whole lifetimes of them, and when she looks at him, she can no longer pretend anything was just a dream.

MY RATING: 3 Stars

MY THOUGHTS
For me Angelfire was not particularly a bad read. I just found myself failing to finish it at some points during my reading. Usually I am able to finish a book in two days or three days tops…but for this particular one I took longer than a week to go past half the book.

I have to give it points for having a powerful sword-wielding bad-ass girl as the main character. Ellie is strong and hardcore when she is not being a total teenager who is always thinking about partying and watching movies with her pals.

The book has enough action-packed scenes and with just the right amount of romance (okay not so much), mystery and at times terror.

The only thing I had a problem with was that I found Ellie to be a little too realistic a character, don’t get me wrong on this one. “Real” is good in some books but putting a real teenager in a book about an immortal warrior was just stretching it. She is responsible for saving people and is supposed to be the “vanquisher” of reapers but yet Will, the main guy, had to constantly remind her to not slack off so much. More often than not she preferred throwing parties and buying tight dresses than trying to perfect and improve her should be butt-kicking sword skills.
And I am not a very stylish person so I found the whole “designer label” and name dropping thing a bit unnecessary

. At some points it was all “Chanel” this and “BMW” that. I wouldn’t have minded it all if I was reading another girly book like “It girl” or Gossip girl, but in this type of book it all felt out of place.

All in all, if you are a lover of the Angels and Demons YA Genre, reincarnation, slice of life novels and Egyptian mythology then you should give this book a chance. Who knows you might just like it.

Book Update

5 Aug

So this is just an update on the “book” that I am writing. I wrote a post that I was going to attempt writing my own book and I have opted to go for the Young Adult Genre. It is all still just a work in progress obviously and I don’t really expect anything much from my followers.

The story is about a girl, Faye, who has been having a recurring nightmare for weeks and though she tries not to let it get to her it starts to affect her life and just when she thinks it can’t get any worse a mysterious young man comes into her life. His arrival tears her life apart and makes her doubt everything that she knows. He opens her eyes to a world of magical creatures she never could have imagined and an evil that is determined to destroy the world.

I just posted Chapter One on My writing for anyone who is interested in reading it and hopefully becoming a follower.

Hoping to read what people think.

Opal (Lux #3) by Jennifer. L. Armentrout

Opal lux book 3

No one is like Daemon Black.

When he set out to prove his feelings for me, he wasn’t fooling around. Doubting him isn’t something I’ll do again, and now that we’ve made it through the rough patches, well… There’s a lot of spontaneous combustion going on.

But even he can’t protect his family from the danger of trying to free those they love.

After everything, I’m no longer the same Katy. I’m different… And I’m not sure what that will mean in the end. When each step we take in discovering the truth puts us in the path of the secret organization responsible for torturing and testing hybrids, the more I realize there is no end to what I’m capable of. The death of someone close still lingers, help comes from the most unlikely source, and friends will become the deadliest of enemies, but we won’t turn back. Even if the outcome will shatter our worlds forever.

Together we’re stronger… and they know it

So after I finished reading Onyx.. I could hardly wait to start with Opal. The anticipation was crazy and as soon as onyx was done, BANG, Opal was in my hands again.

anticipation

OH FOR THE LOVE OF ALIEN BABIES EVERYWHERE She has done it again.

shocked

OH MY GOD
Breath Dee, Breath. Okay for this one, I just could not handle it. I was literally bleeding emotion and I thought I was going to go crazy at the end. (okay I kind of did).

calm down

I could go on and on and on and on and on (you get the idea) and talk about how I felt reading this book, but it is a case where “I can show you better than I can tell you” just has to apply. So here goes. My reactions and thoughts as I read this book from beginning to end.

Page one, cancel all appointments and get sucked in the book 🙂

child-very-excited

This could not get any better, but it did. It was Ian Somerhalder perfect and then some.

Fantasizing about Daemon Black

vlcsnap-2013-02-11-13h36m57s220

And at the end of it all I thought I would not survive the awesomeness. It was just amazing.

Now once I reached the end, I was like “Jen, don’t do this to me..this can not be the end.I want to know what happens next.”

cliffhanger

It can’t end like this, It just can’t and then I was crying again. For real I did cry, for Daemon and for katy.

crying celebrity

It was just too much.
After I realized that was the end and that I wasn’t just missing some pages. I guess I was depressed for a while. It was great that people were staying out of my way.

crazy

This is not happening, breath Dee, breath. I feel light headed my poor heart could not take it.

_faint

Then I thought about maybe paying the author a visit just so I could know what happens next. You know, try and persuade her into giving me a sneak peek at her draft or manuscript or whatever he has. I want to know. NOW

vlcsnap-2013-02-11-13h41m38s208

But of course, I am all the way in Africa and right now i can not afford buss fare to go to the capital so there is no way I can “visit” the author. So not going to happen.

So here I am, patiently waiting for the next book to come out and until then I do not know what I am going to do.

NERD

So that is that, I hope you have better lick handling this book than I did. It is like a curse, you are just bound to love it once you start.

Onyx (Lux #2) by Jennifer. L. Armentrout

11 Feb

cover 2

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

RATING: 5 STARS

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! And I thought Obsidian was an amazing book, this is the cherry on top of the cake, the light at the end of the tunnel, the thing at the end of the rainbow and a lining on the clouds. I KNOW, I KNOW I am not making any sense. But that is what this book has done to me. If you did not read the first one in the series ,please go and start reading right away and as soon as you are done PLEASE, start reading this one.

It is breathtaking, face fanning, lip biting, nail eating, mood changing, insomnia causing and absolutely a great read. I love it.
love_struck_smiley_face
Seriously I am in love, like totally going gaga, 100% love struck. Crazy I know, seeing that this is a book. But its the truth.

Most people would be upset at the sexual tension and unending sexual frustration that this book may or may not have.I am not one to give out spoilers (I hate spoilers), but this book will have you wishing you had a smoking hot alien for a neighbor.

All through out my reading, I kept on thinking “Damn, Jennifer how do you come up with this stuff…PERFECTION”.

okay I will try out something a little different here, you know since I am still experimenting with this blog. let me do a 10 reasons why you should read this book.

try something new

10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
1. It will make you feel things you have never felt before

2. It is a gift from up above and not reading it would be like a huge SCREW YOU and just plain mean

3. It is just that amazing

4. Daemon Black is the 8th wonder of the world and you would be missing out by not trying to know him

5. Do it for the love of baby aliens everywhere

6. It is what all good paranormal young adult novels should be and if you love YA, you should read this.

7. An alien from Lux will torch you if you resist reading this (I am not kidding)

8. Douchebagery never felt so good

9. You get an inside look at the awesomeness that aliens bring forth (No, not tentacles and and big green heads..eew)

10. Jennifer. L. Armentrout is a great author and you will enjoy her work (Trust me)

Looking at the reasons, they seem kind of silly don’t they? But hey, you get what I am getting at. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT.

Obsidian (Lux #1) by Jennifer . L. Armentrout

obsidian cover

Book #1 in the Lux series

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don’t kill him first, that is.

My Thoughts:

If you have not read this book already, you best get yourself a copy. I finally get what the hype has been about and boy am I glad to be one of the people who have read it and loved it.
I know that after reading that synopsis, you will have doubts about this book but trust me, you will want to read this one. It is that good. When my sister recommended it to me, I was like “Aliens, seriously? OMG” I was so not looking forward to it. But once I finished chapter one, I didn’t want to stop.
Before you even think it, NO we are not talking E.T type of alien, I am thinking it is Chace Crawford kind of alien. No tentacles or other disgusting bug traits.

I really like Katty or “kitten” as Daemon calls her, she really knows how to stand her ground, just my type of character.
Trust me on this one, you will not regret it. it is funny, witty, hot and just absolutely divine.
